What People Think about Halloween

It is the time of the year when scary movies and freaky stories come around. Halloween is among the most celebrated occasions worldwide. When October reaches its end, Halloween costumes and decors start to emerge. This has become a global tradition. It seems that the planet is becoming one in observance of the day. The event identifies no religion and race. There are Halloween celebrations and observations in America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and even Africa. Needless to say, people have different perceptions and opinions about Halloween celebrations.

For children, Halloween means fun. It is a time when they could go out in their spookiest costumes. They could gather together with other kids and roam the neighborhood, still in costumes, to go trick or treating. This way, they not only have fun wearing costumes. They even get to collect and gather candies, goods, and even coins from homeowners. Households love the idea of having to deal with fun children who are threatening to do a mischief if not given treats. This tradition has become customary. And so logically, for most children, Halloween is fun.

For teenagers, Halloween is an opportunity to socialize with their peers. They could gather to help adults and their parents organize and run up a timely Halloween party. They could enjoy the party with their crushes. It may be a fun time to get along with cliques. They could dance the night away and enjoy sumptuous foods. To teens, Halloween could be spectacular.

For adults, Halloween could be tiring. Imagine how tedious they do to plan and implement party ideas for the occasion. They even incur costs for doing so. They spend endless hours attending meetings with other parents and adults on how to make this coming Halloween party event different from the past ones. To these people, Halloween could be meticulous and draining, but it surely is worth everything. Thus, they keep on doing the same routine over and over again every year. Kids and teens could make sure they could continue enjoying fun Halloween parties.

For religious people, Halloween could be no more than just a pagan activity. The catholic religion in particular could regard usual Halloween traditions as superficial. Instead of praying and remembering deceased relatives and family members, people get busy wearing spooky costumes and decorating houses to scare. There are other beliefs in Halloween that most religions do not agree with. To them, Halloween could just be another fun activity cone by people who are not after spiritual and deeper meanings.

To bystanders, Halloween is a time to observe. It could be fun watching those kids roam around the neighborhood in costumes. It would be chuckling to hear stories of homeowners who have been victimized by mischief and pranks just because they did not give treats. It would be entertaining to get to visit homes that are uniquely and creatively decorated with all those spooky items.

To them, Halloween is no more than fun and interesting. It could be just be enough to make people loom for the coming Halloweens.

What is Halloween?

You surely are aware of Halloween. As a child, you probably have grown scared of all those scary costumes. You also could have fun and unforgettable trick or treat memories. But you could not be familiar about the origin and the real nature of the occasion. Thus, you could start asking yourself, ‘What really is Halloween?’

To begin with, Halloween could be traced to its ancient roots in the Celtic pagan feast of Samhain as well as the Christian holiday called All Saints’ Day. In general, it could be considered as a secular celebration. Some people have been expressing strong feelings for and against the perceived religious overtones. The modern Halloween celebration in he United States was brought by Irish immigrants who took with them the tradition when they migrated to North America during the height of the Great Famine of Ireland in the 1840s.

Since then, Halloween has always been associated with orange and black, now known as the universal Halloween colors. These are associated with the popular symbols like jack-o’ lantern. Aside from the decors, the colors, and the symbols, Halloween has been made even more fun and interesting by the many activities that have created a unique modern tradition.

The occasion is now known for fun tasks like trick or treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, pranks, watching of horror movies, and reading of ghost stories. Halloween has also become that time of the year when people sit back and hear stories and anecdotes about ghosts and paranormal encounters. This notion has created a great scare among children, who now are changing gears and are seeing Halloween more as a fun celebration.

Current Halloween celebration could be traced back to ancient origins, particularly the Samhain, a Gaelic festival. Samhain is an old Irish word that means ‘summer’s end.’ The same festival was also observed by ancient Britons who called their celebrations as Calan Gaeaf. Samhain commemorates the end of the year’s lighter half and the start of the darker half. Thus, some people then called the occasion as their ‘Celtic New Year.’

Nowadays, Halloween could be seen more as a festival for the dead. Ancient Gaels have always believed that Samhain borders the otherworld with this world. Thus, there was a belief that during Halloween, free spirits roam around, both harmful and harmless. This could be somehow related to Christians’ All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days. It has also been believed that wearing freaky masks and costumes was an effective way to ward off unwanted and harmful spirits.

Samhain was also regarded as a great time to stock food supplies and at the same time slaughter livestock. Bonfires have become important because they played significant roles in the Halloween festivities. In the old Irish practice, all fires at home were doused during the day and every home was lit only by the hearth from their own bonfire. Slaughtered livestock bones were cast into those fires.

There were also several other pagan rituals associated with old Halloween practices that have not been carried out to this day.

Unique Halloween Celebration

Are you tired and bored about the usual Halloween celebration? If you want to experience other things and activities other than trick or treating and attending Halloween costume parties, you should head elsewhere. There are other countries that commemorate and celebrate the day in their own unique and outstanding way. One of those countries is the Philippines.

Being among the rare Christian nations in Asia, the Philippines celebrate Halloween with a twist every year. The occasion is commemorated for two consecutive days on the first and second day of November. Actually, they do not call it Halloween over there. Instead, the days are called All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, respectively. This is not unique to Filipinos though. The holidays are also observed in most other Catholic nations around the world.

During Halloween, people in the country go to visit the graveyards of their deceased relatives instead of trick or treating. They spend the two days in solemn prayers. The religion they believe in teaches that the days are the best time to offer commemoration and sincerest prayers to departed family members. In the country, the dead are given particular importance. Their graves are lavishly decorated and the tombs are housed in extravagant mausoleums or min houses.

As they pray, Filipinos light up candles. This has a religious symbolism. According to beliefs, the candles serve as light that reaches their dead relatives. Thus, they light up those even in broad daylight. Some families make Halloween a family day outdoor. They bring along food and recreational items, as if they would go to a picnic. But the odd thing is that those families head not to the theme parks but to cemeteries. For quite some time, Halloween in the country has been noted by this weird practice. Many foreigners and observers are delighted and awed to see this tradition. More surprisingly, some families even decide to stay up in cemeteries overnight. Thus, such grave areas instantly turn into hot party places where people dance the night away, socialize, and enjoy sumptuous meals.

Some people prefer to attend church masses. Again, this has a logical and obvious religious perspective in it. Some families pay hefty amounts for the priest to mention the names of their deceased relatives during the mass. Some priests and even deacons go to the cemeteries to bless the graves, to the delight of the families.

How about parties? In the rural areas of the country, teenagers gather to organize a group that would serenade homes. This could be their version of the Western World’s trick or treat. Instead of candies, homeowners give money, which when accumulated could go to noble causes like building up a church or helping charities.

Modern Halloween celebrations are starting to catch up in the Philippines. Being exposed to western cultures, Filipinos are now starting to adapt the concept of trick or treat. Costume and mask parties are also becoming popular among party animals. It could flood booze and great food in this part of the world during Halloween. It is simply f-u-n!

Things and Tricks You Need to Know about Halloween

If you are among many people who look forward to Halloween, aren't you curious about how it all started? There are more things to this event than costumes and decorations, or horror movies and other kinds of scary stuff.

Looking Back

Its roots is said to be the Celtic festival at Samhain and the All Saint's Day being celebrated by Christians. In 1846 during the Great Famine in Ireland, some versions of this tradition were brought to North America by Irish immigrants. Now, this is more popular and it gave way for decors like jack-o'-lantern to be known worldwide. Popular activities that people do during the event include costume parties, carving scary lanterns, watching horror flicks or telling scary stories, visiting haunted attractions, ghost tours and trick or treating.

The Smahain festival is a celebration being done at the end of harvest season in the Gaelic culture. This was also referred to as the Cltic New Year. The ancient Celtic pagans used such time to slaughter livestock and get stock of supplies to be allotted for winter stores. At the time they believed that during the last day of October, the dead was able to present increased danger to the living as they could cause sickness and damage on crops.

They conduct the festival that included bonfires where the bones from the slaughtered livestock were thrown into. While doing this, the people involved wore masks and costumes, as they imitated the evil spirits to appease them.

Understanding the Term

The term that is now commonly used was originally spelled Hallowe’en. This is the short version of All Hallows’ Even or All Hallows' Eve.

Celebration

Trick or treating is now popular in most countries around the world. Its popularity may be due to the fact that even adults enjoy the occasion. Homeowners would even take extra measures to decorate their homes to the delight of the young trick or treaters. Parents are also very supportive of their young ones. They help them choose their costumes and bring them on various events, like parties or small gatherings where they can meet other people who are very enthusiastic with the occasion.

Decorative Ideas

If you have only recently discovered the fun side of the occasion, here are some ideas that you can use for your decors.

Safety tips when out Trick or Treating with your kids

Halloween is a fun annual event but it can turn into a nightmare if you are not too careful. With lots of kids running around and at night at that, it is not impossible for some kids to get lost and some kidnapped.

Unfortunately, not all parents see the danger in these kinds of events. They feel that because their kids are just in the neighborhood, they can trump around anytime they wish and no harm will come to them. Besides, an adult is with them. But are being inside the a community and being with one adult already enough to ensure safety?

Here are some tips that you might want to go over before you send your little Dracula and Scarecrow out into the night.

1. Use the Buddy system

Make sure that there is one adult companion for every child. That way, they can be watched over. Having one adult companion against two kids can work but only if the adult is used to watching over two kids and that the other kid is a bit older, 8 year old and above. If you have two toddlers, better get two companions. One for each. They can be monsters.

2. Know who they are with

Adult constitutes not only the age but also the maturity. A 13-year-old teener can already be a sufficient companion for a 5-year old but not when the teener is wild and immature. Some teeners will leave their charges to fend for themselves while they go someplace else. Make sure that you know who your kids are with during the trick and treating. If it is a relative, make sure you give appropriate instructions. If it is a babysitter, make sure that you check the references.

3. Start early

Your kids do not really have to venture out at midnight. They can go to houses early, even when there is still light. This way, there will be less people around and thus, they will be easy to manage. If your kids balk at the idea, tell them that people will have more candies to give when they go to the homes early and besides, they can stay at home and help scare trick or treaters come midnight.

4. Bright costumes

Although being Dracula can be good, having them wear brighter and more noticeable costumes is better. This way, they will be more noticeable and less targets for people with sinister intentions. Children wearing bright costumes and those with colors stand out more in the crowd and therefore, less likely to be kidnapped or to get lost.

5. Use the companion belt

If you do not really have a choice and you promised the kids trick or treating, do not take care of them alone. Have some battle gear like a companion belt, which you can attach to your toddlers and then attach to your arm. That way, even when they roam around, you they are still within your reach. They don’t have far to go.

1. Recycle the old ones

Who says you cannot use the old costumes that your kids used the other year just because they are too small for you? If your kids are already too big to fit in any of those costumes, you can still use them as decorations inside the house or in the front yard. You can for instance, dress up a mannequin with the costumes and display them in the front yard. This can become a great Halloween mascot in your home.

Parts of the costumes can also serve other purposes. For instance, you can use the cape of the vampire as a table runner or use the witch’s hat as a place where kids can get their candies during trick or treat hours. You can reuse the masks and the baskets that are often with costumes and put them as centerpieces on the table. There are lots of other things that you can do.

2. Make your own

If your kids are only going to use it for the day and will not be going on a party, you won’t really need to buy an expensive costume. It is actually pretty easy to make your own costume. If you have no idea how and you are not so crafty, you can always download instructions from the internet or look at craft books that specialize on Halloween stuff.

You can even make your own Halloween trick or treat bags and Halloween place cards. There are a lot of things that you can make on your own. Make sure though that you compute the cost of all the materials and check if you really are going to spend less when you do the crafts. Sometimes, do it yourself projects can be much more expensive. So computer first.

3. Shop on sale

It will be already too late for this article as most sales have already come to pass. But you can still take advantage of the sales and promos after Halloween. Buy for next year if you have the extra money. If you don’t another option is to rent costumes. It will be vastly cheaper than buying one.

Halloween Preparation Made Easy

Here comes Halloween again and you are probably in pins and needles trying to prepare the house and the food and the trick and treat baskets and the costumes and the… Halloween can be a great event for kids but for their moms, it is a nightmare literally. Not only do they have to cut some things on the budget (which is now harder than before with the recession kicking in), they also have to make sure that everything is in order with the kids’ party get up and decorations at home. Below are some useful tips that moms and dads can check out to make their Halloween more fun and less stressful.

1. Recycle from last year

This is perhaps the secret of all moms who do not really stress out, come Halloween time. They reuse what they have used the last time and simply put them in other places or use the items differently. For instance, a costume that your kids cannot wear anywhere can become a scarecrow right outside the home or maybe a hanging vampire on your wall. A pair of baskets that will not really match the costumes of any of your kids this year can be filled with candies that you can display as a centerpiece. There are a lot of things that you can do with items that you have already used. It is not only less stressful to you but also to your budget.

2. Plan the whole year round

The wise parent will not wait the last minute for Halloween to come. He or she will be on the lookout for items for decorations and costumes for the next year months before. This is actually even better on your budget because you are able to take advantage of sales and discounts that will probably be coming right after the Halloween period. But don’t buy the chocolates in advance. They might get spoiled when Halloween comes.

You can also take advantage of the promos immediately after Halloween. This is the best time to shop as items that were not sold the week before will surely be sold on a discount now. Make sure though that you have somewhere to store the stuff that you bought. Otherwise, don’t buy. They might get destroyed. So weigh in all your options too.

3. Involve the whole family

Nothing beats having the whole family working with you. The job becomes small because it is divided into piecemeal sizes and you also get to hang with your kids and bond with them. Having these kind of activities will also help your kids realize just how hard it is to organize a Halloween party or to prepare their Halloween costumes.

Thus, they will be less demanding when it comes to changing costumes every year and less snooty when things do not go according to schedule. With them working with you, they will learn that it takes a lot of work and not just done with a swish of the mommy wand.

Halloween Party on a Budget

With the economic crunch, some people are seriously thinking of not participating in this year’s trick or treating celebration. But this is easier said than done if you have little kids who are looking forward to the event the whole year round. Explaining to these little kids that you don’t have the budget to buy new costumes and candies to give away will be harder to do.

But you don’t really need to have a big budget in order to organize a great Halloween party or to participate in a Halloween celebration. The most basic thing that you need is the costume and some candies. If you know how to properly budget and make use of your creativity, you can come up with both without really spending so much. Here are some ideas that might help you with your seemingly impossible task.

1. Rent a costume

Costumes need not be bought. You can always rent a costume for your kids. Make sure though that they are clean and disinfected before your kids wear them to avoid skin problems. There are numerous costume rental shops in the city. If you have a hard time looking for one, you can check out the directory or surf the internet for some listing.

2. Make your own costume

If your kids are only going to use the costume for a few hours of trick or treating and there is really no party that they need to attend, a simple costume can do. They don’t need anything elaborate. You can even make your own costume with the use of paper products. If you are not the crafty type, you can always look for patterns and easy to follow instructions on craft books and online.

3. Recycle old decors and costumes

If you have costumes in your attic that you will not be using, don’t let them rot inside there. You can reuse them by putting them in front of the yard as a scarecrow or a mascot. Costumes can also become a centerpiece on a table. Halloween baskets with Halloween costumes can also serve as casing for candies. There are lots of things that you can do for old costumes. Some can even be cut up and the fabric can be used to make new ones that your kids can wear. It’s all up to you. Let your imagination run wild and your creativity soar.

4. Check the online promos

Online shopping is actually not a hassle especially if you have lots of promos and discounts to avail. Some stores are promoting their online shops and are selling their products cheaper online. If you are on the lookout for a particular item, why not check out the online stores of the bigger chain stores and department stores like Target and Wal-mart. They offer lots of great deals for people. Make sure though that you check their delivery dates. The goods may be delivered to you too late if you do not look.
